Hippology is the study of horses. Hippology classes provide an opportunity for youth to expand their knowledge of horses in a fun, educational atmosphere. Youth can learn more about horse breeds, horse anatomy, horse health, colors and markings as well as husbandry. A youth may choose to simply enjoy the learning atmosphere or use the knowledge to prepare for competitions at the Horse Jamboree.
Competitions that take place during the Horse Jamboree include:
- Hippology Contest- youth are tested on their knowledge of the horse through written exams and identification of items related to the horse industry.
- Horse Quiz Bowl - similar to the game show Family Feud, Youth are “quizzed” over different horse related topics…..kids with the fastest finger earn points for their team.
- Individual & Team Demonstrations & Public Speaking- Youth present information on a topic of choice relating to the horse industry.
- Photography, Drawing, Horse Clothing, & Posters- Youth prepare items as described in the rules for evaluation.
“Just a quick unsolicited plug for both of these classes – last year was Olivia’s first time to attend both the horse judging and hippology classes. I was amazed at how much she picked up regarding the care, confirmation, breeds, health issues and so forth of horses - - - her confidence in talking about and being around horses truly increased as a result of attending these classes. Olivia chose not to do any of the competitions last year, but that did not stop her from being a part of the group and learning SO much! She also created closer ties to the other horse project kids, as they were spending time with one another outside of summer riding practice. All around, a great program, and I would highly recommend getting your 4Her involved!
From a pleased and impressed mom,
Jodie
