2010 Safety Clinic/Horsemanship Skill Assessment Guideline

1.         Each youth is required to bring their own tack and horse.  It is strongly recommended that Youth bring the horse and tack they plan to use for the coming horse project year.  Riding helmet and proper riding attire are mandatory.

2.         Parents are encouraged to audit the educational safety clinic with their youth.  Please feel free to ask questions.

3.         Parents will not be allowed to assist the youth while taking the written test or during the skill test in any way unless invited to do so by the instructor.

4.         Youth and parent/s should plan spend to the entire afternoon so youth can complete all requirements of the safety clinic and/or horsemanship skill assessment.

5.         The safety clinic and horsemanship skill assessments will run concurrently.  Everyone should be unloaded and checked in by 1 p.m.

6.         The safety of all participants and the welfare of all horses will prevail at all Horse Project events. The horse project leaders will dismiss a youth, if in their assessment a situation becomes unsafe or inappropriate.

7.         The horsemanship skill level of each Youth will be assessed.  Youth will be assigned a “riding level” based on their ability to handle and ride their horse that day.  Youth will be given another chance to be re-evaluated later in the summer if they want; the date for reassessment will be announced.

8.         Beginning on May 3, 2010 the horse project will offer riding classes on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Madison County Fairgrounds for ALL levels of riders.  This allows families the flexibility to choose which night/s they want to attend.  A riding syllabus will be available at a later date which will provide the topics/skills to be covered each week.  Wednesday night will be a repeat of Monday night.
